The State Immigration Project

The State Immigration Project is a national network that advances inclusive policies, counters harmful legislation, and strengthens immigrant rights at the state level.

Launched in 2012, the State Immigration Project brings together four national partners and 15 state-based research groups to combine rigorous economic and policy analysis with on-the-ground advocacy.

The national partners—Immigration Research Initiative, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, National Immigration Law Center, and Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy—support the immigration research of 15 state-based economic analysis partners. The local partners bring local expertise and deep relationships with organizing, advocacy, media, and political leaders in their states.

In addition to supporting these 15 groups, the national partners provide broad support on immigration research to groups around the country in the State Priorities Partnership (coordinated by Center on Budget and Policy Priorities) and Economic Analysis Research Network (coordinated by the Economic Policy Institute).

By informing action with data, the network helps state groups respond to emerging policy threats while making a sound case for immigrant inclusion.

The body of work of the State Immigration Project includes hundreds of reports on a wide network has worked on a wide range of topics, from the case for tuition equity in higher education to the benefits of allowing all state residents to apply for a driver’s license to the reasons for states to invest in legal services for immigrants.
